Best German Heavy Metal Bands

Sunday April 22, 2007
My list of the Best Swedish Heavy Metal Bands has been one of the most visited articles on this site, and has generated a lot of response. From supportive emails to vitriolic message board attacks, metal fans have voiced their opinions about that list. Germany is another country with a great metal heritage and tons of really good bands. It was tough narrowing the list down to 10, and even tougher ranking those finalists. Check out my list of the best German heavy metal bands, and then post your comments and lists.

Very cool that the Scorpions made your list. A lot of people overlook them because of their lame 80’s stuff, but their early music was great and far more influentual than some younger metalheads probably realize.

Are you kidding me with this list ?? Edguy should be in the top 5 especially these days !! Also Advantasia ! Running Wild and Kreator shouldn’t even be listed among others.

I’m glad to hear that people still talk about the early days of the Scorpions. The 70’s albums were great stuff. However, my Top10 german metal bands would look like this:

10-Grave Digger
9-Sodom
8-Destruction
7-Blind Guardian
6-Accept
5-Helloween
4-Kreator
3-Crematory
2-Haggard
1-… SCORPIONS!!!

(12) Try Something New says:

This list seems to rule out actual german language…

How about…
*** IN EXTREMO ***

Megaherz
Lacuna Coil
Demons & Wizards (Project group with Alaska Fire and Blind Guardian)
Engelsblut
V8Wankers / V8Wixxxers
Cold Coda

Just a note, something that stood out… the 80’s crop up frequently in the list. Not bad picks, but try something new…

Scorpions early work like Virgin Killer and In Trance are pure classic metal/hard rock, especially with Uli Roth.
Accept are awesome, their just one of the best metal acts of all time.
Ball’s to the Wall is pure Speed Metal
Scorpions with Accept, best German Metal their both as good as each other, all the rest of the other German bands follow, these 2 awesome metal acts

(15) DEATHMETAL\m/ says:

Rammstein really isn’t true metal according to a lot of people, which is why they aren’t in his list probably. A lot of people don’t think nu-metal and industrial metal are true metal. I am just saying what a lot of people are saying. In fact, Uli Kusch and Roland Grapow were most likely kicked out of Helloween for saying they liked the dark sound of Rammstein to Michael Weikath (I am glad they were fired personally).
