Hollenthon - Opus Magnum Review

Monday June 16, 2008
It's been seven years since we've heard from the Austrian band Hollenthon. In the meantime vocalist/guitarist Martin Schirenc has been busy with Pungent Stench. They split up last year, which gave Hollenthon the opportunity to complete their third CD.

Opus Magnum is dark symphonic metal combined with melodic death metal. The songs are very epic, with orchestras and choirs blending nicely with the metal guitars. In addition to the usual orchestral stringed instruments, Hollenthon incorporates a little brass into the mix, which is a little different and helps it stand out. The songs are mostly in the five to six minute range, which is perfect. It allows for the songs to unfold, gives plenty of room for instrumental breaks, but doesn't drag on too long and get into self-indulgent territory.
