Slipknot - All Hope Is Gone Review

Tuesday September 2, 2008
Slipknot's last studio CD Vol. 3 The Subliminal Verses found them being more melodic and even acoustic at times. All Hope Is Gone has some of that, but it's a much more aggressive album overall.

The CD gets off to a really strong start with "Execute." It's fast and intense, packed with a lot of anger and aggression. There are several songs in that vein, ferocious with politically and socially charged lyrics. Slipknot also shows a mellower side with mid-tempo songs and the ballad "Snuff."

Thus far I really only like Sulfur because it actually sounds like The Knot…The rest of it sounds a lot like Stone Sour…

While I enjoy bands progressing and evolving, trying to mix two sounds into one band was a bad choice in my opinion. I will respect all of the members because they have earned that respect for all that they have given to music but this is probably my least favorite album from them as compared to the last album which I thought was their best. I will listen to it more than a few times before I really pass judgement on it, but it sounds too much like Stone Sour for my taste. I have come to love The Knot because of the originality that they brought to the scene and I will say that this is NOT original in terms of The Knot.

I tend to think that this might be their last album because I think that music direction might be an issue with the members of this band because the rest of Slipknot are members of Slipknot, not Stone Sour aside from Taylor and Root.

Slipknot should focus on being SLIPKNOT, not trying to emulate Stone Sour.

this album is very, very dissapointing. i have been such a fan of slipknot for there power and aggression on there previous albums and this album fails to provide much of either on this album. where has the power gone? where has the slamming, heavy riffs gone? it certainly hasnt sucked me in to keep listening to it.
maybe too much stone sour influence? definately too much singing. i hope they make another album and bring back the sound that they were recognized for.
but i fear this could be the end.

lame this is not slipknot. psychosocial is the only song that reminds me of what i think slipknot, but the chorus kills it.

(6) Zerosignal says:

This album has so much going on at any given time that it’s almost hard to concentrate on the different aspects of each song. that’s not a bad thing at all, but it is a bit confusing. allow me to explain.

The best way i can describe this album is if you took a truck full of death metal and black metal cds and ran it into a truck carrying grunge/rock cds, then pieced them together at random. it’s a very strange sound, in a good way. it’s chaotic and unpredictable, it goes from almost black metal riffing to singing parts that seem like they would normally be in rock.

i must say this though, i’ve never heard anything like it, not even from Slipknot. it has the weird, edgy, creepiness of Vol 3 but can go straight to Iowa-style brutality in an instant.

“Sulfur” is the most amazing song, especially with Psychosocial right after it. and i really dig the math-metal (or tech metal, or whatever) going on in “Butcher’s Hook” which goes from heavy metal to melodic grunge/rock, back and forth.

but, after all is said and done, the point is, i can’t stop listening to it. i could analyze a cd to the bone, but these songs will get stuck in your head forever. it’ll sneak up on you like taking shots, and then it’ll haunt you like a f***ing ghost.
