Best Heavy Metal Albums Of 1996

Sunday November 9, 2008
1996 wasn't as strong as either the year succeeding it or preceeding it, but there were still some solid releases. Pantera continued their string of excellent albums, and non-American bands outnumbered the American bands on this year's list. Check out my list, and then comment below with your top heavy metal albums released in 1996.

This list is one of the biggest let downs: How come an ‘just nice’ – album top the list and an highly influential all-time-classic be lost in the middle?! While it may not top the unbelieveable 1995 it is arguably better than the following year. For one thing you have the big ones, namely Sepultura – Roots, Tool – Aenima, and Psychotc Waltz’s Swansong ‘Bleeding’ which each are better than everything released the next year, which is saying something and in turn makes them alltimers. Then you have Iced Earth’s breakthrough and perhaps most inspired offering ‘The Dark Saga’, Nevermore’s first great album in The Politics of Extacy, backed up by the more positive In Memory EP and Cradle of Filth’s black metal classic ‘Dusk and her Embrace. The Jester Race would have made it as their most atmospheric and cohesive album, but I think it came out end ‘95. Then we can start to talk about the interesting but nowhere exceptional ‘…Southern Trendkill’. Carcass, Cannibal Corpse and Rage Against The Machine also dropped, which are supposed to be good but I still have to listen to…
