After 1996 was average, the following year saw some really good metal albums released. 1997 was a difficult year to select the top 10 releases. For the second time this decade Emperor topped the list, and groups like In Flames, Gamma Ray and Stratovarius made return appearances. Which CDs do you think should be on the list? With sophisticated extreme metal classics like ‘Anthems…’ and ‘Enthroned…’ ruling the charts, don’t forget about the equally stunning ‘City’ by Strapping Young Lad.
Notice how Judas Priest and Testament respectable try to hold up with the more aggressive metal trends while Dark Tranquillity and Machine Head like In Flames slightly fail to equal their breakthrough albums.
