Best Heavy Metal CDs of 2008

Thursday December 11, 2008
As the end of another year draws near, it's time for my selections of the best CDs of 2008. Overall 2008 was a good, but not great year. There were a bunch of outstanding releases this year, but the depth didn't seem to be what it has been the past few years. Many different genres are represented in this year's top 30, and the artists range from newcomers to grizzled veterans and everything in between.

It's an interesting process revisiting the year's best. At the time of their review there were some CDs I thought for sure would end up way up on the year end list, but after repeated listens and the passage of time may not have held up as well as I initially thought. Conversely, some CDs that I thought were good ended up being outstanding once they had a chance to grow on me. So after hours and hours of listening, ranking, re-ranking, anguish and re-re-re ranking, here are my picks for the top 30 CDs of 2008. Let me know who would be your number one, top five or top 10 in the comments field below.

2 Cor Scorpii – Monument
3 TMDC – Trivmvirate

None of them are in your list. It’s beyond me…

(2) I Am The War says:

The No. 1 Heavy Metal CD of 2008 is:
Warrel Dane – Praises to the War Machine
I’m suprised it didn’t make the list. It must be No. 31.

(3) Merdoc says:

Where All Shall Perish? Awaken the Dreamers was a fantastic album. Job For a Cowboy’s Genesis wasn’t to bad either… But hey, this list was exponentially better than Hit Parader’s. Those old bastards have no idea what heavy metal is. Warrant? Whitesnake? They need to be sacrificed at a Gwar concert with that kind of talk.

(4) Hguols says:

I can’t believe the new Abigail Williams didn’t make your top 30. I would have put that in my top 5. Likewise, I can’t believe Enslaved made #7. I would have left that in its case.

I’m glad the new Belphegor and Cradle of Filth albums made your list though. Those are both great.
