Best Opeth Albums
Tuesday March 10, 2009
Opeth has redefined the definition of death metal by adding progressive, jazz, and folk elements into the mix. With epic songs, the wide range that vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt brings to the table, and the technical prowess of all its members, Opeth has evolved from a straight-forward death metal band with acoustic pieces to a full-on progressive metal band. Keyboardist Per Wiberg had a big part in this transformation, especially on later Opeth albums. Through it all, Opeth has maintained a loyal fan base, earning the respect of the metal community.
Dan Marsicano has put together his list of the best Opeth CDs. Do you agree with his choices? Post your comments below.

Pretty accurate. I would switch Still Life and Blackwater Park but i’m a sucker for Still Life.
Opeth is one of those rare bands who have never (at least in my opinion) released a CD that was less than very good. Most are great and it’s hard for me to narrow down to my favorites and even harder to order them. That said, though I love both Orchid and Deliverance, I think I would replace them with My Arms, Your Hearse and Watershed in my top 5. MAYH may even be my #1. Still, like I said, I really couldn’t order them from 1 to 5 (let alone order all 9 studio albums).
This is the one case where an analogy with the question “which of your children do you love best?” is most apt. How do you answer such a question? For me, however, “Morningrise” holds a special place because it was the album which introduced me to Opeth. It has been a constant fixture on my ipod and I swear, I listen to the song ‘Nectar’ at least 5 times every day, except for that one time at the beach when someone stole my ipod–I only got to listen to it once that day.
Blackwater Park, Hearse, Still Life, Deliverance…and this one’s difficult to place…Damnation.
