Recommended Band: Psychotic Waltz

Monday September 7, 2009
Periodically I recommend a different metal band you might not be familiar with. Most metal fans know the major artists, but sometimes it’s nice to dig a little deeper to more underground or even unsigned bands. This week’s recommended band is Psychotic Waltz. They started as Aslan back in the mid ‘80s, and changed their name to Psychotic Waltz shortly thereafter. Their debut was 1990’s A Social Grace, and they released four studio albums before breaking up.

Psychotic Waltz played a unique brand of progressive metal. It was complex with a lot of psychedelic influences. There were also a lot of contrasting elements. Some parts were very mellow while others were more intense and metallic. Singer Buddy Lackey, also known as Devon Graves, has released several albums with his band Deadsoul Tribe. Drummer Norm Leggio is currently in Cage. All of Psychotic Waltz’s albums were excellent, but if I had to recommend just one, it would be 1992’s Into The Everflow.

Genre: Progressive Metal
Comparable Artists: Fates Warning

Good choice, I have 2 of their CD’s, thanks for reminding me to pull them out for another listen. They had really cool artwork and the music would appeal to open minded metal fans not looking for aggressive head banging metal.
