Reptilian is the fifth full-length CD from the Norwegian band Keep Of Kalessin, whose sound has evolved from raw black metal to a more complex and melodic brand of the genre. Drummer Vyl (Vegard Larsen) is on his second stint with the band. He was a member from the band's early days to 2000, then rejoined KoK in 2004, He fills us in on the new album, their upcoming U.S. Tour, road stories and other subjects.

Chad Bowar: How does Reptilian compare to your last CD Kolossus?
Vyl: Reptilian goes straight for the kill, with more power and edge than the last record. The production is heavier with a more contemporary sound, without losing the organic feel to it. It is by far the best record we've made and a big leap in the right direction, we feel. It's darker, heavier and better executed than anything we've ever done.

Was your songwriting or recording process any different than usual?
Yes, we have our own studio now, up and running. So instead of rehearsing the songs as a group, we all took turns in the studio and rehearsed while the tape was running. Sometimes the first things that come out when you play a new song are the best to come out. So this way we can save on tape all the different approaches that come with rehearsing new songs. It's great for keeping an eye, or an ear for that matter, on your own progression throughout the recording. You really learn what works or not.
