5 Questions With... is your chance to get to know a new or up-and-coming metal band. Eat The Gun hail from Germany, and recently released their latest CD Runner. Vocalist/guitarist Hendrik Ücüncü introduces us to his band.
Give us a brief history of Eat The Gun.
We formed the band back in 2002, so next year will be our 10th anniversary. The new album Runner is our third full-length album. We released our first EP Kingsize in 2003 followed by Cross Your Fingers in 2006 and Super Pursuit Mode Aggressive Thrash Distortion in 2009. So far we have played about 500 club and festival gigs all over Europe, most of them in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. We're proud of having played with a number of great bands like Danko Jones, Duff McKagan's Loaded, HIM, Status Quo, Backyard Babies, Toten Hosen and many more.
How has your sound evolved/progressed from SPMATD to Runner?
The last album was louder, wilder and far more aggressive than Runner. It was the first album we recorded as a trio. We had to redefine our music during the recording process, which was a big challenge. Since then we got accustomed to the new lineup and focused on better songwriting and a heavier, more bombastic sound for Runner. I think the album is the first one that represents Eat The Gun's musical essence perfectly, especially songs like "My Retribution" or "The Evil in You and Me," which combine classic songwriting with heavy riffing and catchy melodies.
What are your upcoming tour plans?
First of all we're looking forward to the release of Runner in the U.S. on August 30. This is our first official U.S. release and we're really stoked how people are going to react. In December we'll be touring with Doro through Germany, and early next year we'll play our own headlining tour through Europe. We'd love to tour the U.S. one day. So if there's any band out there who needs a support act from good old Germany, give us a call.
What's the metal scene like in your area of Germany?
Germany has a huge metal scene. In our area we have tons of young metal 'core and punk bands, but very little hard rock or heavy metal newcomers. Our biggest influences were actually not German bands, but U.S. bands like Metallica, Guns 'n' Roses, KISS or newer bands like Alter Bridge or Papa Roach. We want to keep the tradition of handmade rock music alive, that's our basic motivation. If you come to see us live you'll hear exactly the same as on the album. There is nothing more disappointing for a rock fan than bands that can't play their songs like they sound on record. Good rock music is based on good sound. If you have a good drummer, bassist, guitarist and singer, you got all you need for a cool rock n roll band. Our philosophy: less is more.
Anything else you'd like to mention or promote?
Thanks for your interest and support! Go and listen to our new album Runner at www.eatthegun.com, and maybe one day we'll come to the U.S. to play a tour. It would be a dream come true!
