5 Questions With... is your chance to get to know a new or up-and-coming metal band. Wizard Rifle are a duo from Portland, Oregon whose CD Speak Loud Say Nothing comes out in March. Sam Ford introduces us to his band.
Give us a brief history Of Wizard Rifle
The two lads of Wizard Rifle formed in 2009 with the intent of injecting some raw energy into a musical world water-logged by shoe-gazing knob twiddlers and flaccid folkies. The band quickly found itself sharing bills with some of the finest metal and noise-rock bands in Portland, and in the spring of 2011, embarked on its first nationwide tour, coupled with reckless Norweigen rockers, Arabrot. One year later the band was picked up by Seventh Rule, issuing their first official full-length release Speak Loud Say Nothing. Wizard Rule has planted the seeds for another cross-country trek starting in April.
How would you describe the style/sound/genre of Speak Loud Say Nothing?
We never seem to be satisfied if we can label any of our songs as one genre. Depending on your listening background, or your given mood, you can hear just about anything in there. We have been told that once you reach the end of our songs, you forget where you start, and this sort of movement is something we try to create in everything we write. I would describe it as a fistful of pummel-rock, ala lightning bolt and hardcore acts such as Converge, amidst a wash of reverberated psychedelia and bong laden-doom. We like strange rhythms too.
What has been your most memorable Wizard Rifle show, and what are your upcoming tour plans?
There have been a ton of amazing shows. The Nanotear SXSW Showcase, Fall into Darkness metal fest in 2011 and 2012, and we've played a handful of seriously raucous house/warehouse shows, which are kind of the best. We are doing a full U.S. tour in support of our release which starts in April.
What's the metal scene like in Portland?
Every form of metal that you have or have not yet imagined exists in Portland. Shows usually entail a mish-mash of genres. Audiences are a sea of head-bobbing, occasionally erupting into a hurricane of moshing gore. Oh yeah, everybody likes to drink beer.
Anything else you'd like to mention or promote?
We'd like to give a shout out to Seventh Rule and the striking, experimental metal acts coming from this label: Atriarch, Battilus, Stoneburner and The Swan King to name a few. Also we'd like to give some serious ups to Nanotear Booking who continue to put on the best Portland metal shows, and help spread the gospel across the nation, and facilitate weirdos making weird music such as us.
