Doom metal got its start back in the early '70s with Black Sabbath's famous downtuned riffs and dark lyrics. The genre is known for thick, heavy guitar riffs and usually slow tempos. Other bands began playing doom in the '80s, such as Candlemass and Saint Vitus. If you're a newcomer to the genre, or just want to learn more about it, we've come up with a list of essential albums. It's not meant to be all-encompassing, just a solid 10 albums that give a good representation of doom metal in its different variations.
