At The Gates:
Swedish melodic death band At The Gates was highly influential in leading the Gothenburg sound that would become a major presence in metal during the 1990s. At the height of their popularity, the band fell apart and dissolved in 1996. They would reunite in 2008 for some live shows.
At The Gates formed in 1990 in Gothenburg, Sweden. After a short time together, the band released their first EP, Gardens of Grief. The band signed with Peaceville Records and their debut album The Red In The Sky Is Ours was put out in 1992. The band’s sound at the time was different than later releases, with a neo-classical approach that resulted in long compositions and the inclusion of a violinist at key points.
1993’s With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness was still structured similarly to their debut, with their longest song to date, “Primal Breath,” on it. However, the song were getting shorter and more precise, a step closer to what would be achieved in only a few short years.
1995’s Slaughter Of The Soul
was their most commercial and critical success, with a punchier production and stronger songwriting. At The Gates would find themselves the flag bearers of a new sound, one that was named after their home town. Along with In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates became internationally known among metal fans.
Breakup and Reunion:
This new found popularity helped to give them some spotlight in the United States with a tour and airplay on MTV. However, the Björler brothers surprised many by leaving the band in 1996, leading to the dissolution of At The Gates.
In 2007, it was announced that At The Gates would reunite for a brief tour in the summer of 2008. The band played at several European festivals, including the Wacken Open Air and Swedish Rock Festival, and also embarked on a tour of Japan and the U.S.
