Riotgod allows Pantella and Baglino to express their own ideas and music apart from the Dave Wynthrop-led Monster Magnet. The rhythm section might be the same, but the comparisons to Monster Magnet aren’t. Riotgod offer more of an organic and free-form style of rock ‘n’ roll than their full-time gig does. However, some stoner elements are present on Invisible Empire, but mostly, it’s just great rock ‘n’ roll.
For the most part, Riotgod’s foundation is steeped in Soundgarden and Led Zeppelin influences. Vocalist Mark Sunshine’s voice is so charismatic and electric, often times sounding like Chris Cornell or a young Robert Plant. Guitarist Garrett Sweeny is a real sparkplug on Invisible Empire. His heavy, distorted, chunky riffs and fiery solos really show off his talents.
CD opener “Breed” hits you like a ton of bricks with its heavy distortion and big rhythm section. It’s like Black Sabbath with some heavy groove. “Fool” has a sludgy groove with great layered vocal harmonies.
The Zeppelin influences really stand out on the acoustic CD closer “Rebirth,” which will remind you of something off of the English band’s third release.
Invisible Empire is a great followup to their debut. Riotgod has a modest attitude and a great rock ‘n’ roll spirit. Their songs are easy to follow along to and the melodies and harmonies really stand out. It’s heavy, groovy and loud.
