Car Bomb - Centralia

About.com Rating three out of Five

By Chad Bowar, About.com

Car Bomb - Centralia Relapse Records
Everybody needs a hobby, and for most metal band those hobbies include drinking and playing video games. Car Bomb's members are into things a little more complex, like computer programming and quantum physics. That definitely influences the sound of their debut album.

Centralia is very technical, precise and measured, but that's only half the story. The band also has another side that's esoteric and experimental. Combine the two and you have a very interesting album. You'll hear a lot of Meshuggah style technical riffs that are very heavy, but you'll hear much mellower sections that are almost jazzy sounding. The tempos change multiple times in each song, even though most tracks are around the two to three minute length.

The different song structures and styles are interesting, but the album is lacking in hooks. Car Bomb is an extremely talented and creative band, and if they can make their songs more memorable the sky is the limit.
