A Different Breed Of Killer - I Colossus

Rise Records
Some bands spend years toiling in the garage before getting signed to a record deal. Others have the skill and good fortune to get discovered rather quickly. Knoxville, Tennessee's A Different Breed Of Killer falls into the latter category. Just over a year after they were formed, they secured a deal and are releasing their debut.

I Colossus is an ambitious concept album about a huge deformed creature that escapes from the cave where it was banished to for 20 years and tries to destroy everything. A Different Breed Of Killer plays a mixture of death metal, metalcore and grindcore. Their songs are very intense, but also have plenty of melody. The songs structures are predictable, with galloping riffs slowing down into frequent breakdowns and then speeding up again.

Vocalist Jesse Mainor alternates low pitched death metal growls with frenzied, high pitched screams. It helps add diversity to the mix. A Different Breed Of Killer have excellent musical chops, and the songwriting on I Colossus is catchier than most bands in the deathcore genre.

(released April 29, 2008 on Rise Records)
