Dokken - Lightning Strikes Again

Rhino Records
I remember seeing Dokken on the Monsters Of Rock Tour in Minneapolis back in 1988 and really enjoying their set. The band had some huge albums and several hit singles like "In My Dreams," "Alone Again," "Dream Warriors," "It's Not Love" and "Heaven Sent." But at the pinnacle of their success, the band's infighting got the best of them and they split up. They reunited several years later, but never even approached their original success.

The 2008 incarnation of Dokken includes original members Don Dokken (vocals) and Mick Brown (drums) along with guitarist Jon Levin and bassist Barry Sparks. I was prepared to dismiss Lightning Strikes Again. After all, Dokken is 20 years past their prime and they suck without George Lynch, right? Surprisingly, this CD is a refreshing return to form.

Dokken has always been able to write memorable singles, and there are plenty on this album that fit that description. Instead of trying to fit in with today's modern rock bands, Dokken does what they do best. Big melodies, searing solos and massive hooks hearken back to their glory days of big hits and bigger hair. Don Dokken is 54 years old, but his voice is still in good form. I'm not sure how much of a market there is for Dokken in 2008, but Lightning Strikes Again shows their brand of music is still alive and well.
