In an unusual style change, Dying Fetus has decided to go in a new direction on their latest album and are surprisingly effective at playing smooth jazz. Not really. War Of Attrition is exactly what Dying Fetus fans have been waiting four years for: their trademark brand of death metal flavored with grindcore and hardcore.
The songs on the CD come barreling at you at warp speed with monster riffs and some of the best guitar work they've ever done. The drums are ridiculously fast with blast beats and crushing fills. It's extreme and brutal and any other appropriate death metal adjective you can think of, but the technicality and effective hooks make Dying Fetus stand out.
John Gallagher's vocals are low pitched cookie monster gurgles, and the mid range screams are taken over by bassist Sean Beasley. The production on War Of Attrition is also very good. From beginning to end, Dying Fetus proves they haven't lost a step and are still a force to be reckoned with.
