Reviewing this CD is difficult because of the sad circumstances surrounding its release. Elis' lead singer Sabine Dunser tragically died shortly after the recording of her vocal parts for Griefshire. The rest of the band carried on and completed the CD in her memory.
Elis is a gothic metal band from Liechtenstein, and Griefshire is a concept album about two brothers who are religious fantatics and their journey toward salvation. The songs are epic, with orchestral strings and choirs mixing with metal guitar riffs. The CD has a lot of variety, with atmospheres ranging from dark to light and everything from slow ballads to fast and more intense tracks.
Dunser's vocals are ethereal and haunting with lyrics sung in both English and German. There are also a few male harsh vocals that add some spice to the mix. Gothic metal fans should enjoy this CD, an excellent combination of power and beauty.
