2006's Allegiance was Firewind's breakthrough, and The Premonition continues that momentum. The lineup has really jelled, and this CD is more of a complete band effort instead of being Gus G and some other guys. Firewind's brand of power metal is a bit more intense this time around, with stellar guitar work. They also pack in plenty of hooks and melody.
Papathanasio's vocals are strong, with a bluesy base and plenty of power. You'll hear elements of David Coverdale and Jorn Lande, among others, in his style. The boldest move on The Premonition is Firewind covering the '80's pop classic "Maniac." It was originally done by Michael Sembello in the movie Flashdance. It's a bit campy, but they put enough punch into it to make it at least tolerable. This CD isn't as flashy as Firewind's last one, but after a few listens it holds up just as well.
