Freedom Call - Dimensions

SPV Records
Freedom Call is a German power metal band who has been around for about a decade, and their music is in the vein of groups like Helloween and Gamma Ray. Their debut album was 1999's very good but unfortunately named Stairway To Fairyland, and they have released several excellent CDs over the past few years.

Their fifth studio album is Dimensions, an epic and grandiose effort with big hooks and singalong choruses. Freedom Call generally sounds upbeat and positive, but there are a few darker elements on this CD as well. There are several songs that are excellent, with quality musicianship and a lot of memorable qualities.

Unfortunately, there are also a few clunkers that are either too cheesy and over the top, or just fall flat. There is a nice amount of diversity on the album, and Chris Bay's vocals are generally good. If Freedom Call would have trimmed two or three songs, it would have made a solid album a lot better.
