In 2008 the technology available for recording is amazing. Everything is digital, and there are all sorts of complex software that can make something you recorded in your basement sound professional. But on Conqueror, The Gates Of Slumber wanted it old school. The CD was recorded in full analog at Volume Studios in Chicago.
It's appropriate that The Gates Of Slumber went for a retro recording style, because their sound is vintage doom metal influenced by classic bands like Black Sabbath. Conqueror has several epic songs clocking in at over 7 minutes, with the longest coming in at 16 minutes long. They are packed with fuzzy guitar riffs, multiple tempo changes, and plenty of long instrumental sections.
The Gates Of Slumber are able to plod along at the typical doom metal pace, crushing everything in their path, but they are at their best when they amp up the tempo. Those songs are catchier and the musicianship is sharper. There are times of excess and songs that go on a little too long, but overall Conqueror is a varied and ultimately satisfying doom/stoner metal CD.
