Gigan - The Order Of The False Eye

Napalm Records
Fans of Godzilla may recognize the name Gigan. It was Godzilla's most brutal and violent adversary, who had hooks for hands and a buzzsaw built into his stomach area. It's an appropriate name for this band, who use brutality and extremity as a potent musical weapon.

After releasing an EP, The Order Of The False Eye is Gigan's first full-length CD. It's an ambitious effort that utilizes elements of death metal, grindcore, industrial and experimental metal. At times the songs are complex and technical, similar to math metal but a lot more intense. I guess you could call it math grind. Nonstop blast beats propel intricate riffs and unusual arrangements.

After a while that type of music becomes really oppressive, with the unrelenting density starting to suffocate. That's precisely when Gigan eases up on the grind and gets groovier. Gigan has a lot of psychedelic elements to their sound, which sounds odd for music played at this speed and intensity, but it works. Just when you think you're regained your equilibrium, they unleash the brutality again.

Gigan has characteristics of bands like Dillinger Escape Plan and Meshuggah, but their use of psychedelic and electronic sounds separates them and gives them a unique sound. The Order Of The False Eye can be a challenging listen, and wraps up with a 20 minute instrumental of noise, feedback and atmosphere. They're not for everyone, but Gigan's brand of technicality and experimentation will draw some loyal adherents.
