Goathemy - Frostland

Goathemy - FrostlandOpen Grave Records
After releasing several demos and EPs, this is the first full-length for the Finnish black metal band Goathemy. Frostland is cold, bleak and harsh, but it also very melodic.

The most unique thing about Goathemy is their use of a female vocalist to contrast the raspy black metal style male vocals. Dark sings in a mid-range voice, not the ethereal or operatic soprano sometimes heard in metal. She provides a perfect melodic counterpoint, and it's especially effective when she and vocalist Goath are singing at the same time.

Goathemy's music has the blast beats you'd expect with black metal, but they also have some acoustic and mellower moments. Overall it's an effective balance of blasphemy and beauty.
