Grimen is a combination of Norwegian folk music, electronica and classical. The songs are sometimes mellow and ambient with a dreamy atmosphere, and other times have a metal influence with fewer strings and more guitars. It's avant-garde with a lot of unusual and experimental elements and extended instrumental sections. There are a wide variety of emotions conveyed in the songs, from calmness to melancholy to anger to joy.
The lyrics and spoken word interludes are in Norwegian. Ihriel's voice is strong and pure with a very ethereal quality. Ihsahn's harsh vocals add an edge to the songs, and there are times when they both are singing, which adds yet another perspective. The addition of the Harding fiddle, which is Norway's official instrument, is what really sets Grimen apart and makes it even more unique.
