Opus Magnum is dark symphonic metal combined with melodic death metal. The songs are very epic, with orchestras and choirs blending nicely with the metal guitars. In addition to the usual orchestral stringed instruments, Hollenthon incorporates a little brass into the mix, which is a little different and helps it stand out. The songs are mostly in the five to six minute range, which is perfect. It allows for the songs to unfold, gives plenty of room for instrumental breaks, but doesn't drag on too long and get into self-indulgent territory.
There's a lot of diversity with the vocals on this CD. Schirenc uses a death metal growl that is very understandable. There are also a lot of choir vocals that add to that symphonic/classical feel. A few female alto and soprano vocals add spice to a couple tracks as well. Since they've been absent from the scene for so long, Opus Magnum may be a lot of people's introduction to Hollenthon. It's good to have them back, as the symphonic metal genre is stronger with them as a part of it.
