On their third release, the Finnish melodic death metal band Insomnium continue to improve. Above The Weeping World is very aggressive and intense, but also extremely melodic with some really catchy songs.
It's also a diverse album as mellower acoustic passages contrast the brutal death metal. I like how the band showcases their melodic skills with long instrumental passages before diving into the aggressive vocals of Niilo Sevanen. There is no melodic singing here, just low pitched death metal growls.
This album works on multiple levels. It has the anger and aggression a good death metal album needs, along with a lot of melody and hooks. In addition, it has the variety and diversity that will keep you listening.
