Prehistoricisms finds the band with a new guitarist, Dave Timmick, after Leon Del Muerte left the band last year. Intronaut didn't miss a beat, and their progressive and experimental style is fully intact.
The songs on Prehistoricisms are sometimes psychedelic and sludgy, other times harsh and brutal, and Intronaut is always experimenting and trying something different. Heavy down-tuned guitars, unusual rhythms and tones and general unpredictability have become hallmarks of their sound.
Intronaut excels at musical twists and turns, ending "Any Port" with a minute plus drum fill, and transitioning between trippy prog and technical mastery at the drop of a hat. The CD ends with the 16 minute epic "The Reptilian Brain," which is divided into five separate sections.
While Prehistoricisms is a compelling and unpredictable CD, it doesn't have quite as many memorable moments as their full-length debut. There are a few lulls and experiments that don't really work, but overall it's still an interesting listen.
