Heimgang continues Kampfar's black metal tinged with folk sound, but the songs are more focused. Instead of the lengthy opuses of the last album, they've increased the song number and trimmed the length. The longest track on this CD is just over 6 minutes long.
That makes for more diversity, and there is less repetition on Heimgang than their last album. There are some very catchy parts with a lot of melody and hooks. The extremity comes with the harsh black metal vocals. Dolk rasps about crossing into the underworld in his native Norwegian.
Kampfar's folk metal influences also help create diversity. Traditional black metal is tempered by brief folk metal sections that add the perfect amount of atmosphere and a different vibe. Heimgang is aimed at a black metal audience, and Kampfar's sound is much more similar to groups like Darkthrone than it is to any folk metal bands.
