Lamb Of God - Wrath

Lamb Of God - Wrath

Epic Records
As Lamb Of God's latest opus Wrath opened with a mellow beginning, I was a bit concerned that this was the album they decided to "experiment" or try to get some radio airplay. Thankfully it was just an instrumental intro, and typical LoG kicked in with "In Your Words."

Lamb Of God has become one of the biggest bands in metal today, and Wrath will only propel them higher. They are a well oiled machine at this point with an instantly recognizable sound, and this CD both focuses and expands their musical vision.

Writing great riffs has always been a strength for Lamb Of God, and there's an ample supply here. Willie Adler and Mark Morton also get a chance to solo, but not as often as in the past. The songs on Wrath are punishing and heavy, but also packed with groove and melody.

There are a few standout songs on the album, starting with "Grace." Its acoustic intro gives way to pummeling drums and angry vocals from Randy Blythe. It's one of the catchiest songs on the CD, and has some of the best musicianship as well. "Set To Fail" kicks in with excellent guitar work, and Blythe's yells and screams transition to brief semi-melodic singing, which is an interesting twist.

The album closer "Reclamation" also starts acoustically before taking the listener on a 7 minute trip through various tempos, intensities and vocal styles. Wrath may not have a signature single like "Redneck" from their last CD Sacrament, but overall it's just as powerful and potent.
