Moonspell - Under Satanae

SPV Records
Moonspell is a Portugese metal band who has been around for quite a while, having gotten their start in the early '90s. Their first full-length was 1996's Wolfheart, but prior to that in 1994 they released an EP Under The Moonspell.

Moonspell revisits their early days with Under Satanae. They re-record the songs from their debut EP, and also several songs that date back before that, including their demo Anno Satana and the pre-Moonspell song "Serpent Angel."

With modern production and the band's improved musicianship, these songs don't sound dated at all. The EP songs are atmospheric with folk and Middle Eastern influences. The vocals are mostly melodic, with some harsh vocals and a few female vocals as well. The three songs from the Anno Satana demo have more of a black metal vibe, and the last track is the darkest and most evil of the bunch.

The source material for these songs can be difficult to find, and even if you already have the EP and demo, the newly re-recorded versions are a must own for Moonspell fans.
