Moss - Sub Templum

Moss - Sub Templum

Rise Above Records
This is only the second full-length CD in Moss' 7 year existence, but the British band has actually been pretty prolific. They have released a lot of music, but instead of full lengths they have produced many singles, EPs and splits with bands such as Nadja, Torture Wheel and Wolfmangler.

Like their debut, Sub Templum was produced by Jus Osborn from Electric Wizard. To accurately describe the CD's sound, just grab a thesaurus and list as many synonyms of heavy and slow as you can. It's crushing doom metal played at glacial speed. It clocks in at over an hour, but there are only three actual songs plus a 5 minute intro track.

Moss is an acquired taste, as the droning down-tuned guitars bathed in feedback thunder along with simple monstrous riffs. There are extensive instrumental sections punctuated by screeching, anguished vocals buried deep in the mix. If you need hooks and melody, Moss is definitely not for you.

On the other hand, if you have the patience to soak in their brand of sludgy and extreme doom that pulls you slowly downward into an abyss of darkness and despair, Sub Templum will be right up your alley.

(released July 8, 2008 on Rise Above Records)
