This was a really impressive debut. Subtlety is not something that is common in black metal, but there are a lot of subtle musical and lyrical touches that really make this album stand out. Naglfar combines black metal ferocity and grimness with melodic guitars. The songs are diverse with influence of symphonic, viking and death metal. It's an album filled with both violence and beauty.
Two of the three bonus tracks on the re-release are cover songs. One is Iron Maiden's "The Evil That Men Do" and Kreator's "Pleasure To Kill." The Kreator song is far superior to their Maiden rendition, which falls a bit flat. Naglfar hasn't been a very prolific band, releasing only 5 full-length studio albums in their 15 year career. Vittra remains one of their finest works.
