The Redshift is an improvement over Stuck Here On Snakes Way. Omnium Gatherum's combination of melodic death metal with thrash and progressive is intact, and provides a lot of diversity. The songs on this CD are more memorable and catchier than their last release. Aggressive death metal, atmospheric keyboards and progressive interludes flow together really well.
This is vocalist Jukka Pelkonen's second album with Omnium Gatherum, and his performance has really stepped up. His growls are much more varied and dynamic. It strengthens the overall sound of the album. There is also melodic singing, which is effective when used in small doses. On songs like "Greeneyes" when it's the main style, it doesn't work nearly as well.
Omnium Gatherum isn't one of the better known bands in the melodic death metal scene, but if they keep progressing and releasing quality CDs like The Redshift, their profile will be raised very quickly.
