In addition to their stories, Queensryche uses audio clips from different soldiers and even brought some into the studio to do background vocals. It's an interesting concept for a CD, and is executed extremely well on the lyrical side.
Musically American Soldier is typical Queensryche. It's progressive, but also accessible. The band's sound has matured over the years, becoming a little less intense. Horns and keyboards add depth and texture to the songs.
Songs like the opening track "Silver" are punchy and focused, while tracks such as "Middle Of Hell" are more progressive with lengthy instrumental sections. The songs with the most emotional impact are the ones where the soldiers' voices are used to tell their stories, such as "If I Were King."
American Soldier works on all fronts. It honors those who served and gives a venue for their stories to be told. It also satisfies on a musical level, with good songwriting and a nice vocal performance from Geoff Tate.
