Skyforger - Kauja Pie SaulesParagon Records
This is a re-release of the Latvian band's 1998 debut. They have a very unique sound, blending traditional Scandinavian black metal with elements of pagan and Latvian folk music.

Unless you speak Latvian you won't be able to understand the lyrics, but the subject matter deals with Latvian history and the Battle of Saule in 1236. There is a lot of variety in the songs on this album. Grinding fast guitars give way to atmospheric folk music. The vocals are mainly black metal rasps, but there are some melodic choral vocals as well. Some songs have a bleak and cold atmosphere, while others have a much warmer tone. If you're a black, pagan or folk metal fan and missed this one the first time around, it's a worthwhile addition to your collection.
