The French duo Spektr conjures up a forbidding and bleak sophomore album. They combine old school black metal distorted and buzzing guitars and atmosphere with more modern electronica flourishes. The songs are almost experimental at times, with bizarre sound clips and white noise giving way to brief melodies before being pulled back to the dark side.
The vocals on the album are sparse, with the complex compositions taking center stage. At times the songs are too long and lose momentum, but as a whole it's a good blend of atmosphere and extremity.
