Striborg - Nefaria

Striborg - NefariaSouthern Lord Records
The enigmatic one-man Australian black metal project Striborg has released his second CD in less than a year. Also known as Sin-Nanna, he does his best to keep the black metal sterotypes with an unreadable logo and a strict "no interviews" and "no contact" rule to keep his mystery intact. Nefaria includes 7 tracks of new material, plus a 1995 demo called Tragic Journey Towards The Light.

I wasn't a big fan of last year's Embittered Darkness/Isles Des Morts, and this album is pretty much the same. It's raw, low-fi and minimalist, with one riff repeated over and over, sometimes for over 9 minutes. There are some intriguing darkwave/electronica parts of songs, but even those are dragged on way too long and quickly become boring.

I thought the demo, even though it's 12 years old and even more low-fi, was more interesting than the new stuff. The songs are more focused and show slightly more variation, although I won't be listening to either one again. Apparently I'm not hip or underground enough to appreciate "true kvlt black metal."
