Threshold are a band that's almost criminally underrated. They've been around since the late '80s and have been released excellent albums since 1993. Progressive metal fans are well versed in the British band, but to most they are relatively unknown. Hopefully that will change. They have a new record label and an outstanding new album.
Dead Reckoning is powerful and melodic with first-rate musicianship. From quiet ballads to monster anthems, Threshold writes songs that are dynamic, complex, interesting and memorable. There are plenty of hard edged guitar riffs and solos with keyboards adding layers of depth to the music.
Andrew "Mac" McDermott is Threshold's vocalist, and he has a great voice. Whether he's singing in a laid back style on a mellow song or belting it out on a more intense track, his voice is powerful with a great tone. On a progressive metal album there's always the danger of going over the top or becoming really self-indulgent, but Threshold skillfully avoids those traps and have created an album that progressive metal fans will rave over.
