Trail Of Tears - Existentia

About.com Rating four out of Five

Trail Of Tears - ExistentiaNapalm Records
The Norwegian band Trail Of Tears hits a home run (or whatever the equivalent sports reference in Norway is) with their fifth release. Existentia is mainly a gothic metal album, but there are a few other styles and influences at work as well.

The songs on the album are dense and melodic. Keyboards and synth set a dark atmosphere while thrash infused guitars add a dose of heaviness. While the arrangements do get complex with a lot of layers and different instruments, Trail Of Tears never loses sight of the most important part of the song: the hook. And these songs are packed with catchy hooks and choruses.

The vocals on this CD are really diverse. There are three vocalists: a male death metal style growler, a male melodic singer and a female melodic singer. Intertwining those different voices really adds depth and uniqueness to the songs. The female vocalist is French singer Emmanuelle Zoldan, who has the range to go from soft and ethereal to powerful and operatic.

The future of Trail Of Tears is uncertain. After a failed tour of Mexico all the band members except one quit the group. Ronny Thorsen (who does the growling vocals) vows to continue Trail Of Tears, but this may be their farewell album.
