Guide Review - Caliban - The Undying Darkness

I thought Caliban's last album, 2004's The Opposite From Within was pretty good, but nothing spectacular. On their latest release they have raised the bar and taken their music to the cliched "next level."

Caliban's music is metalcore, with the emphasis on the metal. On most albums the guitars or vocals are the first thing that grab you, but for me the rhythm section on this album just crushes. It's rock solid and keeps an underlying groove throughout. The guitars are also very good, with simple but effective riffs.

Vocally Caliban stands out from their metalcore counterparts because they have equally strong hardcore and melodic style vocals. Screaming brutality yields to soaring melody and back again. The production from In Flames vocalist Anders Friden is excellent and he also lends some guest vocals.
