Guide Review - Cult Of Luna - Somewhere Along The Highway

This is not your typical metal album that's loud and abrasive and straightforward. Cult Of Luna doesn't write bitchin' riffs, they construct elaborate soundscapes. Their style of music isn't for everyone, but if you appreciate songs that are unusual and experimental, you should enjoy this album.

Even though there are 8 members in the band, their sound is actually pretty minimal. There are long mellow instrumental passages in each song with just an instrument or two. Then there will be brief barrages of harsh metal vocals and intense guitar, and then the song veers off back into more experimental territory. They also make good use of dynamics, going from soft to loud and back again.

Cult Of Luna's style is progressive, but also has elements of doom and stoner metal. They can sound both crushing and fragile, which shows the level of diversity and musicianship of this band.
