Guide Review - Def Leppard - Yeah!

Def Leppard has always objected to being pigeonholed as a heavy metal band. Ever since their beginnings in the late '70s they've had a glossier edge and a gift for writing songs with monstrous hooks. On this album they show a different side.

Their latest effort is made up of cover songs of some of the band's favorite tracks. They range from glam rock to mainstream rock to pop and are all from the 1970s. Some of the songs Def Leppard covers on the album include T. Rex's "20th Century Boy," Blondie's "Hanging On The Telephone," The Kinks' "Waterloo Sunset," David Bowie's "Drive-In Saturday" and Thin Lizzy's "Don't Believe A Word."

Def Leppard does pretty faithful versions of most of the songs, but the best thing about the album is that is sounds like the band is really enjoying these songs. And of course Def Leppard's sound is so distinctive that every song is "Leppardized." The first time I listened to this CD I wasn't overly impressed, but upon further listens it really grew on me.
