Guide Review - Edguy - Rocket Ride

The long-running German band Edguy knows how to deliver an excellent power metal album. They start with giant hooks and catchy melodies. They fill it in with great dual guitars that are equally skilled at playing basic riffs or intricate solos. The songs are also very diverse, ranging from acoustic ballads to galloping tracks that reflect the album title.

The biggest risk on the album is the song "Trinidad," which has a calypso feel. It's definitely not a typical metal song, and shows they aren't afraid to stretch their limits.

The vocals on this album are also outstanding. Tobias Sammet has a great power metal voice with a lot of range and more importantly he knows how to use it. He knows when to be subtle and when to wail. Edguy is also a band that has a sense of humor and aren't afraid to inject it into their music. It's refreshing in a genre where a lot of people take themselves way too seriously.
