Guide Review - Evergrey - Monday Morning Apocalypse
On their latest album Evergrey has taken a turn toward the mainstream. The songs are shorter and more stripped down with bigger hooks and fewer progressive elements than their previous efforts. The word that most comes to mind when listening to this album is "focused." They get right to the point, avoiding experimental forays and self-indulgent 7 minute songs.
Evergrey hasn't completely changed their stripes. The songs still have some keyboards and an element of darkness. They've just amped up the melody and the hooks. And as always, Tom Englund's vocals are outstanding. His powerful voice is one of the best in metal, and although the songs don't allow him to completely unleash, he still manages to shine.
I was a bit skeptical to hear about the different approach they were taking for this album, but I'm sold. It's heavy, melodic, dark and memorable.
