Guide Review - Gorgoroth - Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam

Since their formation in the early '90s Gorgoroth has been one of the most prominent bands in black metal, and also one of the most controversial. Their extreme views and legal difficulties have kept them in the news, but it's their music that has sustained their popularity and influence.

If looking at the band's picture doesn't scare the crap out of you, their music certainly will. It's black metal with a lot of death metal influences and even some doom metal sounds. It has great grooves and riffs, but also an overriding atmosphere of darkness. Frost (1349/Satyricon) is the drummer on this album, and he simply crushes. He plays at breakneck speed and is the backbone of the songs.

Gaahl's vocals are an evil rasp, and the lyrics deliver Gorgoroth's satanic message. This is an album that will leave you musically satisfied, and as with all really good black metal albums will also leave you feeling a bit unsettled.
