Guide Review - Hevein - Sound Over Matter

The Finnish sextet Hevein are difficult to pigeonhole. They have a cellist and a violinist in the band, but they aren't a strictly gothic group. They incorporate a ton of different styles and make one that is uniquely their own.

As you'd expect with violins and cellos there are a lot of atmospheric passages. But just when you think they are settling in to a gothic groove, out come the thrash riffs. Vocally there is a lot of diversity, ranging from death metal growls to hardcore yells to melodic singing. Hevein are a mainstream sounding band like HIM, but have enough of an edge that fans of more extreme forms of the genre can also appreciate.

This is an impressive debut. Hevein's diversity is noteworthy, but it's even more noteworthy that they have the skill and ability to blend so many different influences into a cohesive and very enjoyable album.
