Guide Review - Merrimack - Of Entropy And Life Denial
I wasn't expecting a lot from this album. I hadn't heard Merrimack before, and wasn't too excited about the usual scary and evil album cover and pretentious song titles like "Descension from Life (Of Spiritual Discipline and Metaphysical Gravity)" and "The Birth of a Lifes Sacerdoce (Of Nascency and Intluctability)" Plus the album is being released on 6/6/06 and the band has a sataniclegions.com web address. How much more cliched could it possibly be? But then I put the CD in and pressed play.
This CD is anything but a cliche. It's complex and intricate but isn't completely polished. The songs are dark and have multiple tempo and style changes. The musicianship is very technical and precise, but there still is emotion. The guitar riffs are melodic and almost thrashy in spots. Vocally it's the usual black metal high pitched yowling, but there is also a low pitching very evil sounding vocal used on a couple songs. I've learned not to judge an album by its cover. This far exceeded my expectations.
