Guide Review - Neaera - Let The Tempest Come

On their second album the German metalcore band Neaera has avoided the dreaded sophomore slump. They've actually improved in all facets, including songwriting and musicianship.

Neaera's type of metalcore is on the brutal side with a death metal influence. There are plenty of breakdowns and double bass, but they have a thicker, more ominous sound than some of their metalcore brethren.

The vocal pitch on the album does vary from low pitched growls to high pitched screams, but the delivery sounds the same on every song. Benny Hilleke's vocals are powerful, but he needs to inject more dynamics into his delivery.

The guitar work on this album is excellent and the rhythm section is rock solid. Germany has spawned some good metalcore bands lately, and this is another one to add to the list.
