Guide Review - Oblomov - Mighty Cosmic Dances

I don't recall ever hearing a pan flute (or synthesized version of a pan flute) on a black metal album. It's one of the many unique things about Oblomov, a trio from the Czech Republic.

They play traditional black metal with death metal influences just fine, and a few of the songs are in that vein. It's when they get experimental that it really gets interesting. They insert saxophone solos over intense, thrashy guitars which sounds odd, but good. They also throw in strange synth riffs in addition to the usual symphonic keyboards.

The vocals on the album are a black metal rasp, with some lower pitched death metal growls. The lyrics are also a little different than you might expect from a black metal group. They are based on the works of science fiction authors such as Isaac Asimov and Robert Silverberg.
